1991 Mercedes G-Class Restomod Is A Cool Mix Of Classic And Modern

It gets an optional five-speed automatic gearbox.

Restomods are all the rage these days with more and more companies entering this multi-million business with classic vehicles. Expedition Motor Company, one of the pioneering firms in the segment in the United States, has a lovely new product based on a 1991 Mercedes-Benz G-Class convertible. The so-called 2022 250GD Wolf is an awesome mix between classic off-road design and modern technologies for better everyday usability. It is now available to order at a price starting at $160,000.

One of the highlights of this new build, which comes with several upgrades compared to the company’s previous G-Class restomods, is the newly available automatic gearbox. You can have the 250GD Wolf with either a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed 722.6 automatic sourced from an S-Class. The gearbox is mated to the indestructible OM602 straight-five cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes, which is a perfect match for the smooth and quiet five-speed automatic.

Giving the vintage G-Class a modern new look is a Gulf Blue exterior paint, which is combined with black wheels, wheel arches, and bumpers. Contrasting durable all-weather Praline vinyl seats have been installed in the cabin, which now comes equipped with modern features such as an air conditioner as standard. There’s also a small infotainment screen on the center console that supports a wireless Apple CarPlay functionality and plug-in capabilities, as well as a pair of cup holders sitting in front of the gear lever. Standard on all G-Class restomods are front and rear heated seats.

This restomod took Expedition Motor Company more than 1,400 hours of work and started with complete nuts and bolts strip-down. New fuel and brake lines have been installed, as well as fresh new body mounts. The axles, brake calipers, and suspension have all been completely rebuilt with the latter now using upgraded springs, shocks, and custom polyurethane bushings for a more comfortable ride. Every G-Class restomod from the company comes as standard with front and rear locking differentials.

Oh No, We Actually Like the Gronos EVO S P900. Come On, Mansory, You Can Do Better!

Business on the outside, party on the inside: this seems to be the main theme behind the Gronos EVO S P900, Mansory’s latest take on the Mercedes-AMG G 63.

Shared with their social media followers, it flirted with the camera in the Middle East for one good reason, as it is limited to that market. Only ten copies will ever see the light of day, including the pictured example, which was built in these colors at the customer’s request.

Sporting a complete body kit, with fender flares, new grille, bumpers, muscular hood, roof attachments, and the usual Mansory branding, it rides on aftermarket wheels. The matte black finish is contrasted by several forged carbon accents, and orange trim, visible at both ends, on the wheel center caps, and brake calipers.

If you’re not exactly fans of the lively shade, then you are probably going to hate the interior. However, ‘hate’ is a strong word, and we reckon that, in combination with the rather stealthy exterior, the cabin is quite eye-catching in this color. It was applied to most touchable surfaces, from the seats, with white piping, to the steering wheel, dashboard panel, door cards with white inserts, center console, pillars, and roof. More Mansory branding decorates the cockpit, joined by some exclusive trim.

Just like their previous P900, unveiled a few months ago, it boasts a power boost too. It has 900 ps (887 hp / 662 kW) – hence the name – and 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft) of torque available via the loud pedal.

That is significantly more than the stock AMG G 63, whose twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 produces 585 ps (577 hp / 430 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft), allowing it to complete the 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) sprint in 4.5 seconds. Top speed is capped at 240 kph (149 mph) when the 4×4 is ordered with the optional AMG Driver’s Pack.

2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class “Edition 550” Rolls Out With Three Exterior Finishes

Mercedes-Benz gears up for massive price increases of the G-Class in Germany. But over in the United States, the Three-Pointed Star is much obliged to present yet another special edition of the luxury off-road SUV.

“Edition 550”
is how this fellow is called. The moniker references the G 550 on which it’s based, and production is limited to 200 examples. A visual package in all but name, the Edition 550 is available in three colors: the Jupiter Red in the main photograph, Arabian Gray, and Moonlight White.

The latter is arguably the most special because it comes from the Manufaktur in-house customization division. Unfortunately for prospective customers, we don’t know how much Moonlight White adds to the sticker price of the Edition 550. Speaking of which, the German automaker hasn’t even bothered to publish the starting price of the glorified visual package.

Mercedes-Benz USA still lists the 2021 model on their website from $131,750 for the G 550 and $156,450 for the G 63, excluding destination.

Loaded with upmarket goodies, the Edition 550 is rocking two-tone leather upholstery of the Nappa variety. Diamond stitching on the Active Multicontour seats and carbon-fiber interior trim also needs to be mentioned, along with an exclusive badge of the vehicle’s silhouette on the center console.

Two more silhouette badges complement the black V8 badging located behind the front wheel wells. The passenger grab handle brings the point home with “1 of 200” and “Edition 550” uppercase lettering.

Just like the 2021 model, the 2022 G-Class Edition 550 takes its mojo from a 4.0-liter TT engine with 416 horsepower on tap. Peak torque is listed at 450 pound-feet (610 Nm) between 2,000 and 4,750 revolutions per minute, which isn’t bad at all for a V8 of this displacement. Capable of hitting 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 5.6 seconds, the 550 is electronically governed to 130 miles per hour (209 kilometers per hour).
