Mercedes CEO Confirms Baby G-Class, Says It Will Be Worth the Wait

For years, automotive enthusiasts and G-Class fans have been buzzing with anticipation over the possibility of a smaller alternative to the iconic G-Wagen. Now, their dreams are coming true, as Mercedes-Benz’s CEO, Ola Kallenius, officially confirmed the development of this new model. Kallenius made this announcement during the unveiling of the CLA Concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show in Germany, putting an end to the longstanding rumors.

In an interview with CNBC that was recently shared online, Kallenius provided insights into the upcoming “Little G,” which has sent G-Class enthusiasts into a frenzy. He stated, “We have something in store for G fans around the world. Actually, tonight we are going to announce that there will be a ‘Little G.’ So, the daughter or son of the big G is also going to come to G fans around the world in a few years from now.”

While the official release date remains unspecified, Kallenius assured fans that the wait would be worth it, saying, “We haven’t set a definitive date, but if you’re waiting for something good, it will be worth the wait.”

Some outlets have already shared official teaser images of the upcoming model, captured during the Munich Motor Show announcement. One such image from AutoExpress showcases a distinctively boxy design that pays homage to the iconic G-Wagen. Notably, there’s a full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, and it appears to be a three-door design. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the body style could vary, and Mercedes-Benz might opt for five doors with a compact cargo area capable of accommodating a few small bags.

Unofficial information suggests that the baby G-Wagen could make its debut in 2026. If this timeline holds true, we can expect to see test mules on the road soon, which will eventually evolve into prototypes camouflaged in thick coverings. There’s speculation that the baby G-Class will be built on Mercedes’ upcoming MMA architecture, featuring a battery-electric powertrain and 800-volt technology for rapid charging.

One significant mystery revolves around the vehicle’s size. Initially, it was thought to be similar in dimensions to the Suzuki Jimny, but other reports suggest it might be significantly larger. As details continue to emerge, we’ll gain a clearer picture of the Baby G-Class, including its size, door configuration, off-road capabilities, and overall build quality.

For enthusiasts of the iconic G-Class, the prospect of a smaller sibling is undoubtedly exciting. The enduring appeal and rugged charm of the G-Wagen, combined with modern advancements and a more compact form, make the “Little G” a compelling addition to the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The countdown to its arrival has officially begun, and fans are eagerly awaiting its debut. Would you consider adding the Baby G-Class to your wish list?
